Ignoring Evil and the Doctrine of Nonresistance
by Col. William Flatt
By far the majority of churches in America today preach against the biblical principles which guided our founding fathers! First, the doctrine of nonresistance; which says essentially that everyone must "submit to the governing authorities", even if they are wicked. It is a suspicious coincidence that the wording in modern bible versions favor the 100% submission to the state concept. Of course, most of these modern Bible versions are mainly creations of 20th century political correctness and bear an ungodly 'new world odor'...
Conversely, our founding fathers relied on either the King James 1611 version or one of its' immediate lineal predecessors such as the Geneva version. Therefore, the Romans 13:1 that our founding fathers recognized as the actual word of God states "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers". And what exactly are these "higher powers"? Hitler? Stalin? Lenin? Fidel Castro? Bill Clinton?? or der Fuhrer George W. Bush?? Was it a sin then to resist Hitler? Obviously not - let's look at what "higher powers" means.
In the original Greek, "Higher powers" translated to mean several different things, including the ungodly "governing authorities" phrase. But let's look at this spiritual issue spiritually. Romans 13:1 tells us that every soul is subject to this higher power. This automatically rules out all man-made laws, because even a global decree would hardly be 100% enforceable even to this day! So, "higher" in the original Greek would best be translated as "Divine". "Powers" in the original Greek also translated to means laws, and together we get the term "Divine Laws". Let's go back and read that again, with the translation intact:
13:1 - "Let every soul be subject unto the divine laws...."
Now, doesn't that make good sense? Only God's laws can cover every living human being who ever existed. Therefore, it stands to reason that the rest of Romans 13 refers to the Christian's relationship to the governing authorities over him or her. As the three Hebrew worthies resisted the command to fall down and worship the graven image, we too are commanded to resist and refuse to obey those secular and manmade laws that conflict with God's good rules of order and justice!
The doctrine of nonresistance is not only absurd, but also a deliberate deception that our founding fathers were very familiar with!! In 1625 King Charles I of England began his bloody reign of tyranny by first dissolving parliament, jailing resisters, and then mercilessly torturing and killing courageous patriots! The wicked King conspired with the head of the Church of England, Archbishop Laud, who erroneously preached that "...to resist the King is to resist God" (sound familiar??)
Space does not allow for the many quotes of our founding fathers addressing the absurdity of the doctrine of nonresistance. But, Thomas Jefferson summed it up best when he penned the phrase "resistance to tyranny is obedience to God"!
Furthermore, in Article 10 of the original New Hampshire State Constitution, it states "the doctrine of nonresistance against arbitrary power and oppression is absurd, slavish and destructive of the good and happiness of mankind". But let's not stop there - let's look at our nation's Declaration of Independence:
"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government and to provide new guards for their future security."
Recently, a friend of mine shared with me that a friend of his was wrestling with the notion that by ignoring evil and therefore allowing it to advance and prosper, the promise of Jesus Christ's return for His saints will somehow happen sooner. It is true that in Matthew 24:37 Jesus did say "But as the days of Noah were, so shall also thecoming of the son of man be", and in the days of Noah (Genesis 6:13) "for the earth is filled with violence", yet it is not our duty to bring about this violence about nor to ignore it! Consider what God's word says about ignoring evil in Leviticus 5:1; "And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it, if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity."
Very simple! Now lets consider what God has to say in Ezekiel 33:6; which tells us what our duty is as a watchman and warn our fellow countrymen!
"But if the watchman see the sword come and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand".
Ignoring sin IS sin! The foreknowledge that your neighbors and fellow countrymen are threatened by hidden dangers ahead carries with this foreknowledge a duty to be a good watchman and warn them! Anything less than doing your best to accomplish this warning certainly sin! James 2:17 points out that "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone". Most certainly we all must humble ourselves and accept the fact that many of us have been misled to believe it is wrong to resist wickedness. Even most preachers are sadly misled!! Some even worse, cling to the doctrine of nonresistance out of cowardice! Just as it was in our forefathers' time, these are the times that try mens souls! One thing is for sure, whether you obey God's own word (not any man) or not, God is most assuredly watching us!
2 Chronicles 7:14 - If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
